# Add relationships and links

Label connections between ideas and place useful web resources directly on the map.

## Before you start

Open a mind map that you are allowed to edit. Relationships and web links described in this guide belong to the mind map; they do not create Jira issue links.

> **Current limitation:** A relationship label is available while the map remains open and is included in a PNG export, but the current release does not retain that label after you leave and reopen the map. Deleting a connection has the same limitation: the connection returns after the map is reopened. Use these controls for the current view or export, not as a saved record.

## Label a relationship between ideas

Every parent-and-child connection can show a relationship label.

1. Find the connection between the two ideas.
2. Move the pointer over the middle of the connection, then select **Add relation**.
3. Select one of the available relationship labels:
   - **blocks**
   - **is blocked by**
   - **relates to**
   - **subtask of**

The selected label appears on the connection for the current open-map session. These labels use familiar Jira wording, but they do not create or update anything in Jira.

## Write a custom relationship

1. Select **Add relation** on the connection. If it already has a label, select that label instead.
2. Enter your wording in **Type relation...** under **Custom Label**.
3. Select **Save**.

The custom wording appears on the connection.

## Change or remove a relationship label

1. Select the current label on the connection.
2. Choose another preset, enter new custom wording, or select **Remove label**.

Removing the label keeps the connection and both ideas. Selecting the active preset a second time also removes that preset label.

## Delete a connection

1. Select **Add relation** or the current label on the connection.
2. Select **Delete connection**.

The line and its relationship label are removed from the current view. The ideas themselves are not deleted. Reopening the map restores the connection in the current release.

## Add one web link

1. Select the idea that should become the link's parent.
2. Select **Add link** from the canvas toolbar.
3. Enter the address in **Web URL(s)**. You can include or omit `https://`.
4. Optionally enter a clearer **Display title**.
5. Optionally choose a **Card tone accent**.
6. Select **Add link node**.

The link appears as a child of the selected idea. The card shows a locally derived title and domain; Mind Map Studio does not need to fetch the destination page to create it.

## Add several web links at once

1. Select the idea that should become the parent of the links.
2. Select **Add link**.
3. Enter one web address per line in **Web URL(s)**.
4. Select the primary **Add link nodes** button. Its label shows how many link nodes will be added.

Mind Map Studio creates one sibling link card for each address. A custom display title is available only when you add one link at a time.

## Change a link's visible title

1. Select the link card.
2. Double-click it, press **F2**, or select **Rename (F2)**.
3. Enter the title you want readers to see.
4. Press **Command+Enter** on macOS or **Ctrl+Enter** on Windows or Linux.

Renaming a link card changes its visible title but keeps the destination address.

## Open a web link

Select the external-link icon on the link card, or select the card and then **Open link**. The destination opens in a new browser tab.

Only open links that you recognize and trust.

## Paste web links onto the canvas

1. Copy one web address, or several addresses separated by line breaks.
2. Select the idea that should become their parent.
3. Press **Command+V** on macOS or **Ctrl+V** on Windows or Linux.

Mind Map Studio creates a child link card for each valid address. If browser clipboard access is unavailable, use **Add link** instead.

You can also paste or type a web address while renaming an ordinary idea. When you finish editing, that idea becomes a link card. If you enter several addresses on separate lines, the first replaces the current idea and the rest become siblings.

## Convert a newly recognized link to text

After Mind Map Studio recognizes a pasted or typed web address, its confirmation briefly offers **Convert to text**. Select it to keep the visible text while removing the web-link behavior.

If that action is no longer visible, use **Undo** and add the content again as an ordinary idea.

## Paste a Jira issue key or URL

1. Copy a Jira issue key such as `AM-123`, or a Jira issue URL that contains a key.
2. Select the idea that should become its parent.
3. Press **Command+V** on macOS or **Ctrl+V** on Windows or Linux.

Mind Map Studio creates a Jira-styled map card containing the detected key.

**This shortcut does not look up or validate the issue.** It does not copy the issue summary, issue type, status, or other Jira data. Use [Add existing Jira issues to a map](./working-with-jira/add-existing-issues.md) when you need a verified Jira issue.

## Check the result

Your additions are ready when:

- The intended connection shows its relationship label for the current view or export.
- Each web link appears beneath the intended parent.
- Selecting **Open link** opens the expected address.
- Saved web-link additions leave no failed-save or cloud-conflict warning.

## Good to know

- Map relationship labels are not synchronized to Jira issue links.
- Relationship-label changes and connection deletion are not retained after reopening the map in the current release.
- Deleting a relationship or web-link card does not delete or edit a Jira issue.
- Link cards are included in the mind map's saved canvas.
- Pasted Jira keys are recognized by their text pattern, not confirmed against Jira.

## Fix a problem

### Add relation is hard to find

Move the pointer over the middle of the connection or select the connection first. **Add relation** stays hidden on an unlabeled connection until you interact with it.

### A web address is rejected

Check the address for spaces or missing domain information. Enter one address per line. Mind Map Studio adds `https://` when the protocol is omitted.

### A pasted Jira key has the wrong details

Pasting a key does not retrieve Jira details. Delete the map-only card, then use [Add existing Jira issues to a map](./working-with-jira/add-existing-issues.md).
