# Organize maps and folders

Keep related mind maps together, find the map you need, and move maps between folders without changing their canvas content. Deleting a map permanently removes the map and its canvas.

## Find and open a map

Folders and maps appear in the sidebar.

1. Expand the folder that contains the map.
2. Select the map title.
3. Check the header to confirm that the expected folder and map are open.

When no filter is active, the number beside a folder shows how many maps it contains. While filtering, it shows how many matching maps are in that folder.

## Filter map titles

1. Enter part of a map title in **Filter maps…**.
2. Select a matching map.
3. Clear the field to show every map again.

The filter checks map titles only. It does not search folder names, ideas on the canvas, or Jira issues.

## Create a folder

1. Select **New folder** in the sidebar.
2. Enter a folder name.
3. Choose a preset color or a custom color.
4. Adjust **Liquid glass transparency** if you want the folder to look more transparent or more solid.
5. Choose the **Classic**, **Project**, or **Workspace** emblem style.
6. Review the live preview.
7. Select **Create folder**.

The new folder is selected and expanded in the sidebar.

## Create a map inside a folder

You can start from any of these places:

- Select **Create new mind map** at the top of the sidebar.
- Open a folder's actions and select **New map**.
- Select **Add map to folder** inside an empty folder.

Then:

1. Enter a title in **Central title / theme**.
2. Confirm the destination in **Folder**.
3. Choose a map icon and accent color.
4. Select **Create map**.

The title becomes the central idea when the new map opens.

## Edit a map's details

1. Open the map's actions in the sidebar.
2. Select **Edit**.
3. Change the title, folder, icon, or accent color.
4. Select **Save changes**.

The **Rename map** pencil in the header opens the same dialog. Despite its shorter label, you can use that dialog to change more than the title.

Changing the folder here moves the map. Its ideas and connections remain part of the map.

## Move a map to another folder

1. Open the map's actions in the sidebar.
2. Under **Move to…**, select the destination folder.
3. Confirm that the map now appears inside that folder.

**Move to…** appears only when another destination folder is available and you are allowed to update the map. Maps are moved through this menu, not by dragging them in the sidebar.

## Delete a map

Deleting a map cannot be undone.

1. Open the map's actions in the sidebar.
2. Select **Delete**.
3. Check the map name in the confirmation.
4. Select **Delete map**.

The map is removed from its folder. If it was open, Mind Map Studio opens another available map or shows **No mind map open**. If another map was open, that map remains open.

## Edit a folder

1. Open the folder's actions.
2. Select **Edit**.
3. Change the name, color, transparency, or emblem style.
4. Review the live preview.
5. Select **Save changes**.

Editing a folder changes how it appears in the sidebar. It does not change the contents of the maps inside it.

Folder changes apply to everyone using Mind Map Studio in this Jira project.

## Understand the General folder

**General** is the default name of the built-in starting folder. You can rename or restyle it and use it as a map destination, but the built-in folder cannot be deleted—even after it is renamed.

## Check the result

Your workspace is organized when:

- Each map appears inside the folder you chose.
- Selecting a map opens its expected canvas.
- Filtering by part of a title shows the expected map.
- A moved map keeps its ideas and connections.

## Good to know

- Map actions can differ by map and user. **Edit**, **Move to…**, and **Delete** appear only when the current account can perform that action.
- Moving a map changes its folder, not its Jira issues or canvas content.
- Folder names can contain 1–80 characters, and map titles can contain 1–120 characters. A Jira project can contain up to 200 folders and 1,000 active maps.
- Treat a change as complete only after its confirmation message appears and the sidebar or canvas reflects it. If Mind Map Studio says a change was not saved or an item was not deleted, retry instead of assuming it succeeded.

## Fix a problem

### A map does not appear in the filter results

Search for part of the map title, not a folder name or an idea from the canvas. Clear the field to restore the full list.

### Move to… is missing

Create another folder first. If another folder already exists, you may not have permission to update this map.

### A map action is missing

The action is unavailable for this map and account. If that is unexpected, use your normal Mind Map Studio support channel.
